FW Dip killed zoas?

I picked up a couple of small zoa frags yesterday. When I got home, I did my usual FW dip. I add a pinch of baking soda and a drop of iodine to a container of water and then soak the zoas for a few minutes ( about 5 ) in it. I've done this with all of my other and never had a problem but this time, one of the polyps on a 2 polyp frag fell off. I glued it back on but as of now it doesn't look good and the other is hanging by a small piece of tissue from the rock. The other frag seems to have melted away overnight. It was about 5 polyps of a small zoa but there's nothing on the wrong that I can see now, even a mat. Did the dip do this?

I've never heard of adding baking soda before. Iodine, yes, in the right dosage.

I normally do my FW dip for zoos with only FWE in the water.

I don't know man Zoa's are hard to kill like that. I dip mine in tank water + idone for maybe 2-3 minutes and shake them around while they are in the dip. Then I rinse em under the tap I just match the temp by feel and put them under as much flow as I think they can handle for a few seconds, then into the tank. I havent lost any zoa's from it.

I would look to other factors. I would think they got really cold at some point maybe? or if they are new frags the fragger used super glue accelerator and got some on them. possible if you let them dry to long out of the water the stuff will soak into them maybe?

I wouldnt think the dip did it unless you put 2 caps of iodine into a teacup. Sorry to hear about the zoa's.

Russ - Baking powder = alkaline buffer. It was actually a marine buffer I had laying around but it's baking powder under a fancy label.

Arati - I think you might be right. I'll have to keep me eye on the frag left and hopefully the other one turns up. Maybe the rock was just moved without me reazling it as it was a small rock and my crabs move the small rocks and shells around.

Yes, pyramid snails are not reef safe. Zoas are definitely a 'menu item' for them.

So I just checked and the orange zoas are gone without a trace - no tissue, even mat left. The blue zoa is just barely hanging on. I dont like this.

Would a cheapo HD fluorescent or CF bulb be ok to use as a frag quarantine over a 5 gallon tank? I dont feel like getting anything expesive but I really would like to start quaranting frags. I'm all set with fish so dont need the tank for that ( hopefully I wont eat my words and find a sick fish ) but don't want to take anymore chances with frags.
