This came up a while ago. I don't remember if it was a thread or just a discussion at a frag swap but from what I remember it's some thing that seems to only happen in captive and not in the wild.

It maybe a type of polyp extrusion. Where the polyp separates from the Skeleton and starts a new one. It's a type of asexual reproduction. It seems that the flesh part falls off from the skeleton and is healthy and opens up fully. The remaining colony is usually fine and continues to grow.

Looks like it, because the other head is splitting too.

I have had it happen to me. I kept the polyp alive for about three months before I lost it.

I think it is discussed in the first volume of The Reef Aquarium.

I had the same thing happen to me. A piece of my frogspawn tentacle separated from the mother colony. It looked good. Unfortunately, I tried to catch it but it accidently got caught by my xenia and ate it.

I've had several fall off and they did well even tripled in size while a couple simply died. I've since given them away and kept one which is still growing.
