Everytime I do a dip for new acros I scrape a small piece of an interceptor pill off and then grind it up. There's got to be a better way! It would be much easier if I could grind up all 6 pills at once and then mix it into RO water and leave it in a dispensor bottle with a dropper.

Anyone ever give this a try? Does this have any effect on the active ingredient?

From what I have read there is some sort of flavoring that is added to the medication in the pill so that dogs will readily eat them. I would lean on believing that this flavoring would eventually pollute the water as it breaks down over time. Not sure, just an idea.

I don't think polluting the water in a dip is much of a problem. There is a thread on RC in the SPS forum right now about Inteceptor pills and the flavoring that is added to them. Apparently the active ingredient is not evenly distributed throughout the pill, so if you are just scraping off some into a dip solution, you could just be adding meat flavoring. While it may make for some tasty red bugs, it probably would not kill them.

In thinking about this, I think I would crush them up and mix it up real good, and then just use a measured amount of the mixture.

That being said, I need to get me some Interceptor. I guess I need to change my dogs heartorm pills.

I was reading the same thread. I think he wants to mix everything and keep a stock solution for future use. I still believe that the water will spoil over time. The flavoring is organic matter. It will be broken down in the water over time.

These pills are incased. I wonder if the incasing is for the benefit of the beef flavoring, or the active ingredient? Would it spoil if taken out of the incasing, crushed and then placed in a jar with a tight lid? No water added of course..

The casing is usually an agar/gelatin based substance that dissolves in water. It just ensures that the medication stays intact as it goes down the esophagus and into the stomach. There it disolves quickly and the medication is distributed via the blood.

It crushed pill should be okay if you keep it in a closed container like you said.

I would think that if it's a medication the active ingredient is consistent throughout the mixture. Doesnt the FDA require homogenous mixtures? Does dog medecine fall under the FDA guidelines?

but anyways...I was thinking about crushing the 6 pack, mixing it with RO water, and placing it into a small glass container with a medecine dropper lid. Kind of how Kent Lugol Iodine is stored. Seems like it would be much easier to just put a few drops into an acro dip instead of painstakingly grinding a smallpiece of a pill everytime.

Even if thereis some degree of "pollution" I'm not sure if this would be significant. The idea of a dip is to kill all the bad guys, and since it would literally just be a few drops mixed into the water the effect would be minute.

Anyone on MR currently doing something like this?

I'm not familiar with interceptor, but my dog's heartworm medication is incased in a foil.
Craig, I would think that adding water to it would cause it to break down.
Hope you get an answer to your question, I would be interested in known my self for future reference.
