Hey guys.. I was on a my LFS and checking stuff around and I saw a nice looking yellow toadstool. I am an sps guy but this thing caught my eyes. Its a small to medium size and bright yellow. My question is my LFS is asking let say more than 50.00 is that a fair price cuz the guy said its a pretty rare kind of toadstool. I dont know much about this coral so wanted to ask if its too pricey and if its a common coral.. thanks and any info is aprreciated

thanks

Awibrandy:

Yellow leathers are Sarcophyton elegans.

That toadstool you pictured is not a bright yellow, as what pnoy described.
That's a regular ToadStool under a yellow bulb.
Appears to be a Sarcophyton sp.

If you notice on this link, the Sarcophyton Elegans is also known as a "Yellow Toadstool"

Pnoy:
Also keep a lookout on "dyed" leather corals.

They aren't dyed. I don't know what store you were in but I get the Yellow Fiji Leathers fairly often from one of my suppliers. They do well in the tank with halides and don't bother the sps or vise versa. They are also reffered to as Yellow Fiji Leathers ( I assume that is where they mostly come from). Pretty hardy in my experience. I have a good pic of one somewhere I will try and post it.

You can always tella dyed coral because the dye leaches out into the shipping water. I have never seen a bag of yellow water from these guys. Besides this is a known species if you look for corals odds are you have seen these.

That is a fairly large one but a good representation of the type of coral.

Dude....No-one stated that it was dyed.
I stated to be "aware of dyed leathers"....not that it is.

Theres not even a pic supplied, to accurately describe the mentioned coral.

Pnoy mentioned that it doesn't look like a Figi Leather, which was the link I already posted.

I have a Yellow Leather & it is not as hardy as regular leathers.
They need intense lighting to retain their bright color, or they will brown out & droop.

Hey Steve

That's the prob...
From what I know, the edges of a Sarcophyton elegans are ruffled...unlike the Toadstool pic Awibrandy supplied.
I really doubt that if it's round, the edges will change when it gets bigger.

I've had mine since small & it always looked the same (except when it didn't get enough lighting & flow:eek:).

Try to snap a pic of it & post up.:)

I dont know if its too much but looking at your pics above its exactly the same thing. I will take a pic when I get home but I am happy to have my 1st toadstool....
