those aren't feather dusters. those look like hydroids to me. Those things pack a pretty powerful sting and will zap anything nearby.

I WUZ excited - but guess now I should be worried. blue colored hairs that they grow from are everywhere, even on the hermit's shell.

Should I try to control them somehow?

I have seen patches of hydroids in tanks but I have never seen them become a real problem (doesn't mean they won't though). I wouldn't worry overly much, but keep an eye on things. If you look close enough, you might see little jellyfish swimming around the tank (those are immature hydroids before they settle).

Just try not to feed them directly and keep an eye on them.
