Sorry no picture, i know i don't enjoy a pictureless post.

I have a green mussel, with brown hairs all over it. I thought it was a plant untill I saw it move, it also has a probe or long mouth that searches for food.
I did go over all the newbie FAQ's before asking.

Cool, and welcome to reefs.org (says the bannerless one). :) As long as it's doing well, you're gonna be golden.

seamaiden, Looks like the admins have missed 2 welcome mats now.
I can't tell you for certain that what you have is a muscle, but I have seen some on shores in the eastern pacific that may have been green (or brown, or red, I am red-green color blind). All I could say for certain is that they were not the blueis black that I was used to seeing.
There are a couple of folks that are really good at identifying stuff here, they may be able to let you know more.

Welcome.

There are mussels that start out and remain green (New Zealand spp., if I recollect), and they are DAMN TASTY! I LOVE mussels! As a matter of fact, when the beau took me out to a great restaurant (sweetheart did it two nights in a row) I had a chance to have the mussels as a first course on the second night and OHMYGOD, they were so good! They also make excellent bait for bass (calico, striped, sand), and maybe for halibut, though I've never been so lucky.

They're called "byssus" or "byssal threads".

The niger might find the smaller mussels tasty treats, as do I. :P
