Yes, they are prolific and will tend to inhabit sumps and the shaded sides of rocks and things.

I wish I could find an exact species name for these. It seems that nearly everyone has them.

Those don't look like them. Every one of these I have, have a distinct funnel on top and are not grouped.

The above animal seems to not be what most people have living in their sumps, or on the shaded sides of their rocks. It appears to lack the fringe spicules that surround the osculum.


I am suggesting that aquarists have Sycon ciliata in their aquariums. Below are photos and diagrams.

Believe us, from your picture, it is them. I have plenty, they are not always grouped, and their crowns are sometimes too fine to see very well. But I am positive that is what you have.
A little test would be to pull the rock out of the water for about 5-10 minutes, wihtin a few days, those sponges will turn brown and die off. But don't do that, they are good fellas. Means there is food in the water column.
