ID this shrimp for me

I just start up my first tank yesterday with LR and LS and today I found this already. Please help me Id it.

Its about 1cm long with 1 claw/clamp. I have no clue how it is surviving the harsh condition the tank is in now

I am not able to see the picture you posted. All I see is the dreaded red X.

How are you posting the pic? As an attachment? Is it hosted elsewhere?

Just for general information, many little creatures will likley survive the cylce. You will likely have ampipods, cocopeds, bristleworms, snails, and possibly even a crab or two. So sit back and enjoy!

BTW, where did you get your LR?

Hi, I live in southern cal, I got my LR from 2 places, most of them are from Jeff's Exotic Fish and the other is from Petown Exotic Fish.
They originated from Fiji and Vanuatu.

Looks like a pistol shrimp, genus Alpheus. You can probably hear it making clicking noises every once in a while when it feeds. The much larger claw makes the noise; it uses it to stun prey.

I found a Mantis Shrimp in my reef aquarium, it was also making a clicking sound. I managed to catch it and it now lives in a 10 gallon nano tank I have setup.

I do not see it much "once in the last month" but I hear clicking every once in awhile. I have not been able to ID it but I have researched Mantis shrimp and they are amazing creatures.

On a side note I am truly scared of it... a.k.a thumb splitter 8O

I have seen some pictures of mantis shrimp in the wild and they are really cool looking. Here is a link with a neat pic of one:

Bobbo..thats a pistol shrimp..ok to keep him...maybe find a burrowing goby and they'll become a "team" more or less...
