I recently decided rather than paying the LFS for my DSB in my Fuge that i would drive 15 min to the beach ( i live in tampa ) and pack a cooler full of sand and use that instead.

What im wondering is , does my DSB from the ocean have any downsides? because it appears to be full of live . I plan to head to the beach one of these days in the daytime and hunt for more sand critters to keep it all moving and alive.

Let me know though . other then the color. kinda grey and ugly , what are the downsides of not paying for livesand and getting it out of the ocean?

Also , is there any harm in having barnicles in a fuge ? they seem to be dead and just have stuff living on them , little clam like creatures and what not . Let me know about them as well.

Thanks as always

Take a look at this thread that I started when I collected some live sand in the Florida Keys.

FWIW, I only added the LS in my fuge, not in my main display. I put the LS in a spare 20G tank I had, and put 50 pounds of SD on top of it. The SD was quickly seeded. I put the SD in my main display.
