I found this on a piece of rubble and am not sure what it is. it measures about 1 inch across the pictures are of course extreme closeups.
Is this possibly Anthelia or Clavularia its a mat that will entirley retract and be almost a smooth mat I took two pictures of it one in its full open state and the other in its closed state. its not fully retracted but you get the idea.

You need to remove that immediately from your tank and send it to me. I will do a study on it while it is in my tank.

Just kidding!

I agree, it looks like a Clavularia sp. to me also. Definitely an octocoral of some type. If you have a copy of E. Borneman's "Aquarium Corals" you can look and see some different types of clavularia.

All the pictures of Clavularia I have seen have feather or solid type pinnules. This picture does not. If you have access to Corals quick reference guide by Julian Sprung look at page 159. Alcyonium sp. looks just like your coral minus dark tips. I know it does not look like any common colt but they show colts that look like this .

$40 Next Day Air service
$25 Packaging Fees
$3 Gas money to get to Fed Ex
$25 Subsistence ( Fed ex is at airport and there is a bar at the airport... you do the math )
$50 1 Hour Labor ( Time is money )
$25 Entertainment expense ( Pull tabs in bar )

That totals out to $424.00

SFLA_PB,
I was leaning heavily towards clavularia but I agree it does look like the alcyonium. However the description gives me the impression that they grow stalks and migrate upwards. The juvenile colony that I have, does not appear to be branching as of yet but its still very small.
Thanks for tormenting me with another class to choose from.
