I am setting up a new tank and have been waiting about three weeks for the ammonia to drop from 2 to 0 anyway this morning I noticed this stuff growing in a couple of places

I looked at pictures but could not ID it as anything.

Also this cycle is taking what seems like forever to complete and I was wondering should I leave my lights off and my skimmer off or run the tank just as if it was full of coral and fishes

I trust you have something in your tank to produce waste in order to produce ammonia in order to cycle your tank? You need fish or something to produce waste ( I use store bought shrimp from the seafood section). Skimmer DEFINITELY needs to be off until you get the initial ammonia spike IMHO. Think about it. Skimmer removes DOC's (dissolved organic compounds) which are the waste you need to produce ammonia! Turn that baby off. Lights can be on, but leaving them on 24/7 may lead to a bit of an algae outbreak if you used certain tap waters to fill your tank (assuming you used something like Instant Ocean with tapwater to make your water).

Well truth be known I did put in a trio of green chromis but I did not want to. My Wife and kid were getting anxious ( as was I...) and they have been in for 12 Days. I have books from Sprung, Tullock, Boreman and now Metelsky and they all list the proper Equipment but do not say to run any of it or all of it during the cycle process.
All suggest : add Live rock and sand and the inevitable die off from these two substrates should produce all the ammonia ewe need.
The tank has been going for 28 Days and still see the same amount of ammonia since about day 5 ( Usually 2 or 3ppm.
Lights are on a timer of 10 hours ( 1 20W 18,000K 1 20W Actinic and 1 55W VHO ½ actinic / ½ 10,000K )
I have 0 nitrites and 0 nitrates ( Since day 1 ) I know this is what I want but I also read that the ammonia should drop off and start to convert to nitrites then nitrates..... anyway I guess I will give the Skimmer a rest and see what happens( yes it produces foam and about a ½-tsp of yellowish water every day )

Holy Smokes.... Perhaps I should introduce myself I am Robert Constant Victim of Murphy's Law. There can be no possible way that its a good thing if it happens in my tank.

Although that picture is quite a convincer. My guess is that I will learn that what I have mocks exactly that flowerpot that you showed me and of course that I have something that needs to be hunted down and destroyed.

If you're still reading the same ammonia, you
might have the problem I did. Switch to a
different test kit. I use SeaTest (or FasTest,
same company). If they both agree, well, you'll
probably need the chemicals anyway. I went from
2 ppm ammonia to zero in a heartbeat.

Jawbone,

IMO from your picture they look more like Aptasia to me. If their little arms are bent and knobby they are probably Aptasia. A couple of peppermint shrimp took care of mine when I first discovered mine. If I can find a picture of mine I'll post the link -- I'm not to successful with pictures as you know.

Regards,
Don

yea i see your still trying.

here is what I did for your pic.

First I went to your album on yahoo
Then I right clicked on the picture and brought up the properties of the picture
the actual web address or URL that comes up I then Highlighted
Then I hit CTRL - C and Copied to the Clip board
Then I went back to my reply and hit the Image button on the Instant UBB Code Frame
and the I hit CTRL - V to paste the URL into the pop up window that asks for the address of your pic

Hope this confuses you more

IMO they are polyups of the Genus zoanthus. try doing a search on the following;

Epizoanthus

Acrozoanthus

Yellow polyups

They do not appear to be apistia, I have yellow polyups that look almost identicle that reproduce by budding a new polyup from their base.

They're not aiptasia. I doubt it's a goniopora either. Looks like zooanthids or some other sort of polyp. Look at the base of the polyps when they're retracted and see if they grow out of a mat or if they're seperate individuals to get a better determination of what they are. A goniopora will be growing out a honeycomb shaped skeleton, and my guess is those are not (they don't look like goniopora to me at all, despite appearing to have 24 fingers at the end of each polyp).

Well I have not destroyed them yet I will let them grow and worst case scenario I will wipe em out later
