I've had plenty of heaters in the years I 've been in the hobby and not one has left me worrie free, or lived up the their claims.
The thermostat is my main issue, second is not being able to crack and leak in the tank.

I want to read others input on heaters, pro's and con's to help pick out the best purchase for my 225 gal.
Money is not a consern to reason of course.

Any input would be great

I use the Won titanium heater. Although it's inaccurate, the aquacontroller takes care of the problem. I still only leave it maybe 2-4 degrees over the limit, just in case my module gets stuck or something. I guess it's more of a redundancy. But better safe than sorry.

What's up Kedd. I guess I'm the only one that his chiller runs in the winter man my apartment gets hot:tongue1:
I would run the heater off a controller myself and I heard that only the older ebbo jabers are full proof.
But I wouldn't ever want to come home to a frozen or boiling tank so I wouldn't risk it.
have a happy thanks giving.

Ebo Jager ROCKS!!! That in conjunction with a controller and you have no chance of cooking. I use 2 smaller heater on the Reefkeeper 2 so even if one heater decides to fail the other will still go. Two thermostats have to blow simultaneously for me to get screwed.

I use Fishcue heaters. Pretty accurate and never had an issue. I used to have Won digital titanium heater until I came down stairs one night the and the digital temp on the unit was at 118 degrees. Which would mean my chiller failed or something was seriously wrong. I had three of them do that and so did a few other hobbiest.

The only time I've had an ebo fail is when I forget to unplug it while cleaning my sump. When I dump in the new water I get a cool little "POP" and everything shuts off. Then I clean out the sump again, and remove all the broken glass. And I start the RODI filter. . .

Ebo jagers on a controller here ( soon).

I actually don't think we'll see an afordable bullet proof heater for tanks for a while. The glass ones don't rust, but can break, and the alloy used in the titanium ones has to be mass produced and cost effective, so it's really cheap or thin. I'm going to dig when there's solid 100% Ti heaters that are the price we pay for a glass one. I'd even go for one for twice what we pay if I knew it wasn't going to corrode and/or leak.

Few Ti rod heaters in the sump controlled by a Ranco controller or ACIII.

For my next large tank, I will be using a Aquatronics's 1,000W fireplug heater and a Ranco controller. This will be more efficient in heating the water before it enters the tank vs. the typical method of heating the entire sump.

Hi Kedd :)

I like many have used Ebo Jager heaters for over 20 yrs and they never failed.
With the titanium craze though, I eventually switched out to all Won brothers until one of them failed on my nano-cube.
I didn't want to go back to glass heaters since my hands are more into the fiddling of the sump and also because I don't think that heaters with the thermostat built within the heating unit are quite as effective, I looked for other titanium heaters. I ended up with some Via Aqua titanium heaters. Still a heater made in China so I don't know if they will have rust issues like some of the Won heaters (beneath the rubber end caps) but i did like them because the controller was separate from the electrical prongs unlike the Won heaters.
Either way all my heaters are either on a Aqua Controller, Reef Keeper, Ranco or Aqualogic single/dual controller for redundancy and a better accurate temp control.
I also went with dual heaters at lower individual wattage vs the old days of a single heater. I still run Won heaters in different tanks on the above controllers since I still had ones that still worked and no rust issues. But again, I would look at either the Via Aqua or Finnex (heater element only) titanium heaters. Though the Finnex, you would need a controller, I would run any heater on a controller whether they came with a built in crappy controller or not.

OT Kedd,
Any insight on how you are taxed payroll wise if one lives in CT and works in NYS?

Thanks,
Warren

I have a old via aqua(3 years) that has a seperate controller and is not titanium, has been working flawless since new.I don`t think they make this one anymore though. I have been using stealth heaters in my customers tanks. They have some sort of plastic outer shell and are claimed to be unbreakable,no problems with them.....

Kedd,

I too was having the same quandry and Jeremy from Premium Aqwuatics recommended that I use the Finnex controller and heating tubes. I have had one on this reef for the past year and 1/2 and it's been bullet proof within a degree since I put it in. I just bought one for my holding system as well and has proven it's accuracy once again. Here is the Combo package at PA

I use the 500w and 800w versions with the controller - its a little more to get one, but it rocks IMO.

Hope that helps,

House

I have had WON Bros. Pro Heat II fail on me twice (controllers are awful)
I have had the Stealth fail on me (stray voltage....found when I put my hand in tank  ).

I also have an old Ebo Jager I'm running. Gotta say that thing is bulletproof. It must be 10-12 years old by now.
I'm also running the Finnex Ti tube.

If anyone ever came out with a rustproof, waterproof, foolproof, shock resistant, unbreakable, dependable heater, I'd be willing to shell out big bucks for that piece of equipment and peace of mind. IMO the heaters in our systems are the one piece of equipment that is most subject to failure.
